New Show Hit/Miss Fall 2016 - Designated Survivor

This feature looks at what may cause a show to perform well or poorly, and today's article examines what may cause Designated Survivor to succeed or fail.

What May Cause Designated Survivor to be a Hit?

Kiefer Sutherland
The actor starred in the popular FOX political thriller 24 for many years. As a result, he likely has a fan base that could follow him to this new show.

Interest in politics due to election season
Coming up on an unusual election, American interest in politics is much higher than usual. As a result, this show could gain viewers who are currently interested in politics, discover they like the show, and stick around.

Much loved and watched trailer
According to the trailer watching article, Designated Survivor had the most-watched out of the ABC trailers, and it was tied with Frequency for the most liked trailer among all of the networks.

What May Cause Designated Survivor to be a Miss for ABC?

Crashing post-election
The political hype will likely die down in November, and as a result this show could fall in the ratings as less and less people are interested in politics.

Incompatible lead-in
The show's lead in of a family comedy isn't exactly compatible, and considering that it is neither weak nor particularly strong, Black-ish will likely provide little to no support for Designated Survivor.

What to Expect for Designated Survivor?

I think that the trailer is the factor that will have the greatest effect, and I predict that this will be a big hit. However, we thought at this time last year that The Muppets and Scream Queens would be big hits.

Which factors do you think will be most in play in causing Designated Survivor to be a hit or a miss? Leave your thoughts in the comments!
