ABC Renew/Cancel Week 8: One Shining Moment for Station 19 or The Rookie, as the ABC Renew/Cancel March Madness Concludes

This week on the ABC Renew/Cancel, it's the announcement of the winning show in the ABC Renew/Cancel March Madness Tournament! Plus, I take a closer look at one of ABC's most vulnerable shows this season!

Abbott Elementary (0.50, 0.28-1.43)
Grey's Anatomy (0.48, 0.39-0.56)
The Rookie (0.33, 0.27-0.38)
Will Trent (0.35, 0.30-0.38)

Not Dead Yet: Last week, Not Dead Yet rose from its season low, drawing a still-low 0.26 in the demo. Still, its retention from The Conners was better than usual, so it was one of the better performances we've seen from it this season. Despite that, I'm still expecting a cancellation. While its delayed viewing was a key argument for renewal in season one, it's working against it this season. The strong multiplatform performance has completely faded, doing just a 0.67 in MP+3 for its premiere, compared to a 1.89 in MP+7 for its series premiere. While it surely closed the gap a bit with a full week of data, that's still a far cry from where it was, showing interest has clearly faded. It's also only gaining roughly a tenth in the L+7 metric (AKA live and DVR viewing, without streaming added in), which is also a clear decline from last season. I don't see much of a reason for ABC to renew this show, especially with two promising pilots incoming next season featuring beloved ABC sitcom veterans. It LEANS CANCELLATION, but I could make a case for an even harsher prediction.

The Rookie: Today, ABC ordered a seventh season of The Rookie. I've been critical of its L+SD ratings performance this season, due to its noticeable declines from its Tuesday run last season, but I've maintained a likely renewal prediction for it due to its delayed performance. I've said many times that I expect season seven to be its final season, but that remains to be seen. It earned this renewal, though, and is a correct prediction.

The First Annual ABC Renew/Cancel March Madness Concludes!

After four weeks of voting, we have our champion... but first, let's look back at the road both shows have taken to get here!

Station 19 had the toughest road of any, having to compete in a play-in round in week one against fellow canceled show The Good Doctor. Thanks to its devoted, passionate fanbase, it demolished the competition and advanced to the Elite Eight, facing off against #1 seed 9-1-1, another show with many passionate fans who also turned out to vote. In the end, despite a thrilling vote that saw both shows take the lead at multiple points in the voting, Station 19 defeated 9-1-1 by roughly sixteen percent and 2,000 votes. In the Final Four, despite a decrease in votes, Station 19 still easily trounced Will Trent, defeating it by a nearly ninety-point margin.

The Rookie was the #6 seed at the start of the tournament, and faced off against the legendary Grey's Anatomy, ABC's longest-running show. In spite of that tough competitor, The Rookie triumphed by one of the narrowest victory margins we've ever seen in a TVRG March Madness Tournament, with a 0.6% margin of victory. If faced Abbott Elementary, ABC's #2 show, in the Final Four round, and won that match pretty easily, with 60% of the vote. In both cases, The Rookie was the underdog. It heads into the championship match as the higher seed, and thus, seemingly the favorite, but it is up against a powerful fanbase.

That brings us to our championship match. Voting kicked off last Monday, and just closed. Over 3,000 votes were cast, and while plenty of fans of The Rookie did show up to support their favorite show, the result was not close. Station 19 obliterated The Rookie, gathering nearly 97% of the vote in the championship match - the largest margin of victory we've ever seen in a TVRG March Madness championship match. It also saw a marked increase in votes from the Final Four round on its way to the championship title. Station 19 received the most votes in every round of competition in this tournament, and this championship victory ends a truly incredible Cinderella run for the long-running firefighter drama.

What do you think of my predictions? What are your predictions? Let me know in the comments below!

The Rookie Renewed by ABC

Officer John Nolan may not be a rookie anymore, but he'll remain on the case for another year. ABC has renewed The Rookie, their veteran police procedural, for a seventh season. The drama series has been a decent live+same-day performer for the network over its run, but is a top performer in digital multiplatform viewing. This year, the show averaged a 0.33 in the L+SD 18-49 demo, a decline from last season, but still enough to keep the show competitive in its hour. The show celebrated its 100th episode this season, and its success in delayed viewing inspired an order for its spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, in 2022. After failing to live up to the success of its parent show, Feds was canceled last year after a single season, but The Rookie remains a valuable asset for the network. Nathan Fillion, Melissa O'Neil, Eric Winter, Jenna Dewan Richard T. Jones and Alyssa Diaz star in the series. This is a correct prediction for The TV Ratings Guide.

The Talk to End in December After Fifteen-Season Run

In a rare shakeup to the networks' daytime lineup, CBS has announced that their long-running afternoon chat show The Talk will end in December 2024, after fifteen seasons. The show first premiered in 2010, after soap opera As the World Turns was canceled following a run of more than fifty years. In the years since, the show has been a reliable fixture of CBS's daytime lineup. Trouble seemed to be brewing for the show after reports that CBS was developing a new hour-long soap opera, The Gates. The show had been one of the lower-rated shows on daytime TV, consistently placing outside of the top ten in the daytime broadcast ratings, and trailing similar panel talk shows such as ABC's The View. Over the years, The Talk has featured hosts Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne, Julie Chen, Aisha Tyler and Carrie Ann Inaba as regular panelists, with  Sheryl Underwood (the show's longest-running host), Natalie Morales, Jerry O'Connell, Amanda Loots and Akbar Gbajabiamila making up the show's current panel.

SWAT Un-Canceled, Renewed for Season 8 by CBS

SWAT has defied death once again. The Friday night procedural, which was canceled last May after six seasons before CBS granted it a reprieve and handed it a seventh, will no longer end with the seventh season, as had previously been announced. CBS has ordered an eighth season of the series, following negotiations with Sony that only began earlier this week. The series was recently added to Netflix, where it has performed well. It has also been a strong performer on CBS, averaging 0.39 in the key 18-49 demo and beating several other drama series on CBS, including FBI: International, So Help Me Todd, and NCIS: Hawai'i. Shemar Moore leads the cast of the series, which also features Jay Harrington, David Lim, and Patrick St. Esprit in starring roles. The eighth season is said to be for a full, twenty-two episode season.

Sunday TV Ratings 4/7/24: CMT Awards Slightly Down from 2023, American Idol Drops Again, The Simpsons Rises (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: CBS's broadcast of the 2024 CMT Music Awards (0.68) topped the night in the Adults 18-49 demographic and was only down by two-hundredths from the 2023 ceremony (0.70). Earlier in the night, 60 Minutes (0.36, -1.05) did not have a large sports lead-in to lift it up, so it crashed back down to normal levels. America's Funniest Home Videos (0.58, +0.12) shot up on ABC, but the momentum stopped there as both American Idol (0.45, -0.10) and What Would You Do? (0.18, -0.08) collapsed. Fox was up with The Simpsons (0.20, +0.03), Krapopolis (0.15, +0.02), and The Great North (0.14, +0.02), but Grimsburg (0.10, -0.01) lost a hundredth. NBC aired repeats of Weakest Link (0.21), The Voice (0.15), and Dateline (0.16). The CW went with comedy film 13 Going on 30 (0.04).

Saturday TV Ratings 4/6/24: Saturday Night Live Jumps with Host Kristen Wiig, UFL Leads Pitiful Primetime Lineup (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: NBC's Saturday Night Live (0.82, +0.21) was up by two-tenths for its Kristen Wigg-hosted episode and was easily the top-rated program of the night. Reruns of The Wall (0.13), Weakest Link (0.12), and SNL itself (0.16) made up the peacock network's prime time lineup. ABC had a modest UFL game (0.18), but it was still over 4x bigger than Fox's abysmal MLS Soccer broadcast (0.04). The CW was only a hundredth lower than Fox with a rerun of I Am Paul Walker (0.03). On CBS, 48 Hours (0.15, -0.07) crashed to a new season low.

Friday TV Ratings 4/5/24: WWE SmackDown Jumps, SWAT and Shark Tank Slip (Final Ratings w/Analysis)

Ratings Analysis: With March Madness out of the way, Fox's WWE Smackdown (0.77, +0.17) returned to Friday night dominance. The wrestling series was up dramatically, almost rising by two full tenths, and more than doubled its nearest competitor in the Adults 18-49 demographic. On ABC, Shark Tank (0.29, -0.03) and 20/20 (0.23, -0.07) were down from their last originals. SWAT (0.33, -0.03), Fire Country (0.38, -0.01), and Blue Bloods (0.32, -0.04) also dropped on CBS. Dateline (0.27, +0.06), on the other hand, was up markedly on NBC. Penn & Teller (0.06, -0.01) shed a hundredth on the CW and was followed by a pilot encore of Sight Unseen (0.03).
